Miniature Landscaping Redwoods
The discovery of the Miniature Redwoods was purely by accident. At the end of a tour of an old growth redwood forest, a group of foresters discovered between two giant trees large numbers of cones. They were all delighted to fill their pockets with cones as man years had past since good cone production. We planted these seed and grew them in our greenhouse just to follow the growth of seedling redwoods compared to tissue cultured trees. Little did we know the significance of this discovery until these trees reached 2 years of age. In all of our years of living in the redwoods we had not seen any redwood trees like these.
Characteristics of the MLR (Miniature Landscape Redwoods):
- Variability exists in growth habit, needle conformation, size, color, density of foliage and number of lead growths and branches.
- Height at 4 years ranged from 3 to 5 ft. .
- The standard timber production Redwood Clone SW 005 reached 20 ft. in 4 years.
- These redwoods can be pruned for desired characteristics.
- Superior clones have been selected and photographed.
- Search for unusual clones will continue.
- Out planting in diverse climate zones is possible.
- Many experienced foresters have seen these trees and relate that they have never seen this amount of variability in the redwood forests.
- Our local landscapers quickly saw the potential of these trees in the urban gardens.
Our fascination with these unique trees caught the attention of local landscape professionals. They saw the potential of growing these redwoods in the yards of homeowners. We have selected the most interesting and graceful clones for tissue culture. Only a few of these beautiful miniatures are presently being produced. We are growing more seedlings from this seed with expectation of finding more very unusual cultivars.
